A little update from South Africa where we have just finished the UCI S1 stage race “Tankwa Trek”.
This race is registered as an UCI class 1 event and also known as the “little sister” of the famous Cape Epic which I am going to race later in March (15-22). Every stage was live broadcasted on TV so you can imagine how much media attention this event gets.
Tankwa Trek is a race where you team up as a pair, means that the whole event has to be raced together within a maximum of 2 minutes time difference between the two riders. I teamed up with my good friend and former Belgian champion Frans Claes. We will also team up together for the Cape Epic in March.
The list of world class riders signed up for Tankwa Trek this year was really impressive. Cannondale, Bulls, BH, Giant and many more was at the start with their factory teams. Frans and I didn’t start the race with super high expectations. For our “team” it was more meant to be a good test and preparation before it is time to go all in for the Cape Epic. –Nevertheless after 4 days of super hard racing we could finish the race in 5th position in the overall. This result maybe doesn’t sound like something special, but when you have a look at the results you will find some of the biggest names in international mountain biking. I will now stay another week down here to test ride some of the trails for Cape Epic, and hopefully Frans and I will be ready to “Rock n` Roll” in 5 weeks’ time.
